Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue

We had something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue. The lovely Amy and I celebrate 39 years of marriage today. We got married in 1984. Ghostbusters was number one at the box office and on the music charts. You have to love some Ray Parker Jr. holding off the inimitable Prince. It was such a great time with so much great music. Carl Lewis had just won four gold medals and the world was introduced to Mary Lou Retton at the Los Angeles Olympics. Michael Jordan was just about to take the sports world by storm. The world was far from Orwellian and Reagan won his second term just three months later.

Disaster

I cannot lie. The wedding was an absolute disaster. It was a hot day for San Diego. I was sweating from head to toe. My tuxedo was a white double breasted model. The designer was Frigidaire. I looked like my grandma’s icebox or the maître de at a cheap Italian place on the west side of Chicago. We hired an inexpensive photographer. Never underestimate the lack of quality that comes with cheap. We have the worst wedding pictures ever, but I was marrying the love of my life. That is all that mattered. The great adventure was beginning.

As God Intended

Weddings are fun, wonderful and expensive. Weddings don’t make marriages. Love, hard work, patience and perseverance make marriages. You, the reader, are thinking the preacher is about to preach. Maybe. I certainly cannot encapsulate marriage better than the Apostle Paul. Submit to one another. Love one another. Sir, love her like Christ loves the church. It is a lofty goal that I have not yet attained. God constructed two institutions. He loves marriage and the church. His bride and your bride are worth everything. 39 years and counting. Here is to many more with the lovely Amy.
