No. I am not a big Shakespeare fan. I have actually only read a few plays all the way through. As for movie versions, I’ll pass. The dude definitely got a lot right in his writing. One of his most famous lines resonates with me immensely today. In Act 1, Scene 3 of Hamlet, Polonius advises his son Laertes, “To thine own self be true.” Truer words may have never been written. Not to be outdone the prodigious sailor Popeye loved to say, “I yam what I yam and that’s all what I yam.” I know. Growing people change, however growing does not mean that you are lost in the process. Growing is about becoming the best version of you. Additionally, you are the only you. God shaped you uniquely and disposed of the mold.
Embrace Your Unique Design
God created you with a unique personality and with distinct abilities and interests. The design is right. God is unequaled in His precision and wisdom. I am always amazed by people who think they know better than God. By the way, there is a God and you are not Him. There is a God and He has already designed you exactly as He intended and His intentions are always for your good. Moreover, God’s idea of good for you vastly overshadows your idea of good for you.
Discover Your Good
Of course there are things that you are very good at. Embrace your strengths and abilities. Find your groove and go with it. You be you. I recently read an article about musicians who lost their way. Many of the musicians made poor decisions because they lost sight of their true self. KISS got away with the disco hit I Was Made For Lovin’ You, however their attempt at a concept album was a disaster. In the event that you discover your good and then abandon your good, it is not the end of the world. Recalibration is always a possibility. Discover thine own self. Keep it real. To thine own self be true and in the process you’ll be true to God’s design and plan. God’s design and plan is always best. Be a better you, but always be you.
