I am sure that you have been hearing about ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence bots that are available on the internet. It is an amazing concept and furthermore, quite scary. I have to admit that I am a little bit, no significantly, freaked out by it. Have I mentioned that I’m old? Truth. Artificial Intelligence is here to stay. My trepidation and wariness will in no way inhibit the move of AI to the mainstream. In addition, no matter how hard we try, we cannot stop “progress”. Philosopher and professor Marshall McLuhan said this about adapting and evolving: “Resenting a new technology will not halt its progress.”
Big Impact
There will be a big impact. AI and its progress shows up, most notably, in the worlds of education and politics. Just this week, ChatGPT passed the bar exam and a medical exam. Not to be outdone a congressman, Rep. Jake Auchincloss (D-MA), delivered a speech on the floor of the House of Representatives that was written entirely by ChatGPT.
I Checked It Out
My own curiosity, coupled with this post from Carey Neiuwhof piqued my interest. I decided to check out ChatGPT for myself. I wanted to know what it knew about the western church. My search of life groups in the church led ChatGPT to write an in depth description of church life groups. It was spot on! I was amazed and astonished. It seemingly knows explicitly everything about everything. ChatGPT could literally write this blog or my sermons for me. Every time. My grandsons may never be required to do their own research. AI will provide it all.
Artificial Intelligence Is Here to Stay
Artificial intelligence is here to stay. I have so many questions. What does it all mean? How do we embrace this technology and maintain our ethics? How will it affect our work moving forward? Does it impact the way that I follow Jesus? What are the ethical ramifications for our lives inside and outside the church?
